Telecommunication in Congo Inc

An exploration of technological infrastructure, global connectivity, and literary symbolism in In Koli Jean Bofane's novel Congo Inc. Bismarckian Chronicle.

The tower as a gateway to globalization

One of the most important symbols in Chapter 1 is the telecommunications tower built near Isookanga's village. The tower represents the arrival of globalization in a remote part of the Congo.

Isookanga believes technology can transform the future of the country. During the inauguration ceremony, he argues:

“It was absolutely necessary to open up the forest by placing telecommunication towers everywhere so that everyone could be connected to the rest of the world.”

Bridging isolated communities

This quotation shows that Isookanga sees telecommunications as a way to connect isolated communities with global networks of communication and information.

Isookanga's vision for the future

Throughout the novel, Isookanga becomes interested in computers, email, and the internet. His interest is clear when his uncle asks about his plans for the future and he replies:

“Globalization, computer technology, Uncle.”

This quote directly connects the novel to the topic of globalization. For Isookanga, technology represents opportunity, modernization, and a vital connection to the wider world.
